Soy chunks choila is a vegetarian dish that is a very popular snack in Nepal. It is specially prepared in Newar communities and mostly served with Samay baji i.e. beaten rice. It is prepared with boiled soy chunks seasoned with added onions, tomatoes, spring onions, and varieties of spices.

Choila is an authentic Newari dish usually prepared using buff meat. But nowadays varieties of choila is available in town such as chicken, goat, duck choila. Among them for veg choila, soy chunks are the main ingredient. I will be sharing an easy and delicious homemade recipe for soyabean choila so that anyone can learn to cook.

Ingredients for Soy Chunk Choila

  • 500 g soybean chunks
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 2 boiled tomatoes
  • 3 green chilies
  • Chopped spring onion
  • Chopped ginger and garlic
  • Ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tablespoon methi i.e. fenugreek seed
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon red dry chili paste
  • 1/2 tablespoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin powder
  • Chopped coriander or dhania powder
  • 1 lemon
  • 3-4 tablespoon mustard oil

Let’s make it

1: Soak soy chunks on Luke warm water for 10 minutes

2: Take a frying pan and add some oil and fry soy chunks until light brown 

3: Then take a big bowl and add soy chunks along with chopped onions, spring onions, green chilies, and ginger-garlic

4: Mash the boiled tomatoes or grind tomatoes along with red dry chili

5: Add the mixture into the bowl with one tablespoon of ginger-garlic paste and then give it a stir

6: Add cumin powder, salt and then mix everything properly

7: Heat up 4-5 tablespoon mustard oil and add methi or fenugreek seed until the seed turn black in color

8: After that add one tablespoon of turmeric into the oil and immediately add it to the bowl

9: Add some lemon and mix everything properly and garnish with coriander on top

10: And it’s ready to serve 🙂
